Communications Internship (Paid)

Internship Background

The Kentucky APEX Accelerator, an initiative of the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC), is looking for a highly detail-oriented and self-motivated student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program to join our professional team and assist with various communications, marketing and finance projects. The Kentucky APEX Accelerator is funded by the Department of Defense and the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.

In this paid internship, you will report to our program’s Executive Director and work closely with our Senior Communications Coordinator and KSTC’s finance team. You will gain valuable real-world experience in a dynamic nonprofit environment while contributing to our mission.

Our Mission

The mission of the Kentucky APEX Accelerator is to promote Kentucky’s economic development by helping companies navigate the complex world of government contracting. We are a statewide program serving all 120 counties from seven regional office locations headquartered in Lexington, KY.

Your Responsibilities

The Communications Intern assists with various projects related to the Kentucky APEX Accelerator’s internal and external communications, marketing, accounting, reporting and contract management duties. Including:


  • Assist marketing and outreach campaigns, including social media and print.

  • Maintain the Kentucky APEX Accelerator’s website, including updating content, creating new pages and maintaining our training events calendar.

  • Communicate with fellow team members and external stakeholders by phone and email.

  • Assist with data management and reporting in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.

  • Submit new contract opportunities for clients using our bid software.

  • Coordinate contract execution by ensuring all necessary parties sign and copies are distributed to relevant parties.

  • Track contract milestones in Excel, including subcontract data, POs, RFP numbers and dates from start to completion to ensure critical dates are noticed.

  • Maintaining a digital filing system to ensure easy access and retrieval.

  • Perform bookkeeping tasks, such as invoicing, paying bills, filing reimbursement forms and tracking expenses and receipts twice a month, which require some calculations.



  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate OR in a master’s degree program in business administration, marketing, communications, English or a related field.

  • Have a proven track record of excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail, organizational and time management skills.

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (particularly Word and Excel), Google Suite and social media platforms.

  • Have an interest in learning about economic development, entrepreneurship and businesses.

  • Bonus: Familiarity with website content management systems (such as Wix), customer relationship management (CRM) platforms, Canva and Adobe programs.


$16 per hour starting salary

Working Conditions

  • We are seeking a full-year commitment but will also consider applicants for the Fall 2024 semester only.

  • The expected workload for this part-time internship is negotiable, but we prefer between 8 and 12 hours per week.

  • Office hours are 9 AM-5 PM, Monday through Friday. However, this role has hybrid flexibility, so some shifts may be completed remotely.

  • Our office is in the Dudley Square building, on the corner of Maxwell Street and Mill Street in downtown Lexington. Free parking is available.
